How Do I Choose the Right Rocker Arm Spot Welder?

WSI Rocker Welder Selection Guide

Selecting the right rocker arm spot welder depends on the material being welded, material thickness, required weld force, throat depth, electrode configuration, production requirements, and available electrical power. The welder must provide enough welding current and electrode force to consistently produce a strong, repeatable weld for your specific application.

Key factors to consider include:

  • Material Type and Thickness: Determine the type of metal being welded and the combined thickness of the workpieces. Thicker materials typically require higher welding current and electrode force.
  • Welding Capacity: Select a machine with sufficient kVA capacity and secondary welding current for your application.
  • Throat Depth: Consider the distance from the edge of the part to the required weld location. The rocker arm length must provide enough reach to properly position the electrodes.
  • Electrode Force: Proper electrode force is critical for consistent weld quality. Pneumatic rocker arm welders generally provide more consistent and adjustable force than manually operated models.
  • Foot vs. Pneumatic Operation: Foot-operated welders are well suited for lighter-duty and lower-volume applications, while pneumatic welders can improve consistency, operator ergonomics, and production speed.
  • Production Volume: Consider the number of welds per part and expected parts per shift. Higher-volume applications may require additional cooling, pneumatic operation, or a more robust resistance welding system.
  • Electrical Requirements: Verify that the facility’s available voltage, phase, and electrical service are compatible with the welder.
  • Part Geometry and Tooling: The size and shape of the component may require specific electrode arms, holders, tips, or custom tooling.

Not sure which rocker arm spot welder you need? Provide WSI with your material type, material thickness, part drawings or photos, required weld locations, and estimated production volume. Our resistance welding specialists can help determine the appropriate welder size, kVA, throat depth, electrode force, controls, and tooling for your application.
