Weld Systems Integrators manufacturers Capacitive Discharge welders [ CD Welders ] for a variety of projection welding applications. This includes projection welding fasteners [ weld nuts and weld studs ] to Gen3 (Generation III) steels. We manufactured our first capacitive discharge welder in 2007, and that welder is still in production today.

Welding 16 Gauge Gen3 (Generation III) Steels

WSI capacitor discharge welders have proven results projection welding fasteners to Gen3 (Generation III) steels. Testing our capabilities in March 2022 at our resistance welding laboratory in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, a team of research engineers successfully welded 6mm weld nuts to 16 gauge Gen3 steel using a current of 390 / 51 kA. The resulting pushout test recorded 2901 lbs.

What is Gen3 (Generation III) Steel?

Gen3 (Generation III) steels are multi-phase steels engineered to develop enhanced formability as measured in tensile, sheared edge, and/or bending tests. Typically, these steels rely on retained austenite in a bainite or martensite matrix and potentially some amount of ferrite and/or precipitates, all in specific proportions and distributions, to develop these enhanced properties.
