Fastener Projection Welding to Cold-Rolled Steel

Welding 6mm weld nuts to 13 gauge cold-rolled steel using a WSI capacitive discharge welder

Weld Systems Integrators manufacturers Capacitive Discharge welders [ CD Welders ] for a variety of projection welding applications. This includes projection welding fasteners [ weld nuts and weld studs ] to cold-rolled steel. We manufactured our first capacitive discharge welder in 2007, and that welder is still in production today.

Welding 13 Gauge Cold-Rolled Steel

WSI capacitor discharge welders have proven results projection welding fasteners to cold-rolled-steel. Testing our capabilities in March 2022 at our resistance welding laboratory in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, a team of research engineers successfully welded 6mm weld nuts to 13 gauge cold-rolled steel using a current of 390 / 54 kA. The resulting pushout test recorded 3747 lbs.

What is Cold-Rolled Steel?

Cold-rolled steel is essentially hot-rolled steel that has been allowed to cool at room temperature and annealed or temper rolled. Cold rolling produces steel with closer dimensional tolerances and a wider range of surface finishes than hot rolling. It is also up to 20% stronger than hot-rolled through the use of strength hardening.

Advantages of cold-rolled steel:

  • More finished surface with closer tolerances
  • Smoother surfaces that are oily to the touch
  • Stronger than hot-rolled steels
  • Increased hardness
  • Resistance against tension breaking
  • Resistance against deformation
  • Aesthetically pleasing finish with a wider range of surface finishes

Cold-rolled steel applications:

  • Home Appliances
  • Metal Furniture
  • Aerospace
  • Automotive Parts
