Fastener Projection Welding to Galvanized Steel

Welding 6mm weld nuts to 22 gauge galvanized steel using a WSI capacitive discharge welder

Weld Systems Integrators manufacturers Capacitive Discharge welders [ CD Welders ] for a variety of projection welding applications. This includes projection welding fasteners [ weld nuts and weld studs ] to galvanized steel. We manufactured our first capacitive discharge welder in 2007, and that welder is still in production today.

Welding 22 Gauge Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel is a common material, known for extended durability. Issues encountered when welding galvanized steel corrosion and coating. Galvanizing is to prevent the steel from rusting. The zinc coating on galvanized steels can compromise the weld, make penetration more difficult, and cause a weld to have inclusions and porosity.

WSI capacitor discharge welders have proven results projection welding fasteners to galvanized steel. Testing our capabilities in March 2022 at our resistance welding laboratory in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, a team of research engineers successfully welded 6mm weld nuts to 22 gauge galvanized steel using a current of 250 / 32 kA. The resulting pushout test recorded 782 lbs.

What is 22 Gauge Galvanized Steel?

Galvanized steel is a common material, known for extended durability. Galvanized steel is regular steel covered in zinc, making it rust-resistant. Industries that utilize galvanized steel include wind and solar, automotive, construction and telecommunications.

Advantages of Galvanized Steel:

Galvanization is performed to prevent the main steel from rusting or corroding. When the layer of zinc is added, the zinc itself will rust or corrode. Since the zinc is rusting or corroding, it’s slowing the breakdown of the covered steel.

Another benefit of galvanized steel is that the zinc coating is long-lasting. Zinc can last upwards of 50 years, which prevents you from having to coat your metal again in the future.
