Stronger, generally harder, and having less conductivity, the refractory metal compositions include tungsten-copper, tungsten-copper alloy, tungsten carbide-copper, tungsten carbide-copper alloy, tungsten, molybdenum and tungsten-nickel-iron-molybdenum.

Elkonite® is used to identify a group of metal compositions whose elements consist of the refractory metals tungsten, molybdenum and tungsten carbide combined with copper. Combinations of these elements produce dense, hard metals of superior wear resistance and strength at elevated temperatures, coupled with good thermal and electrical conductivity. The mechanical and physical properties of the Elkonite® materials make them particularly suitable as the die inserts and facings for volume projection welding, flash and butt welding, electrical upsetting, electroforging and mash welding applications.

Elkon® 100W is extremely hard and its ductility is relatively low. It cannot be machined but may be ground to the required shape. It does not alloy appreciably with nonferrous materials and is used for cross-wire welding of metals such as copper and brass. It is also used for electrobrazing electrode material and for some electrical upsetting operations.

Elkon® 100M is used principally for electrobrazing electrode material and for cross-wire welding of nonferrous metals. It is not as hard as Elkon 100W material and may be machined or drilled to fit the parts to be joined. A typical application of this material, as an electrode, is the welding or brazing of braided or solid copper conductors to ferrous or nonferrous terminals, lugs or fittings.

Anviloy® 1150 is a machinable tungsten-based material. It was developed primarily for die-casting, aluminum permanent molding, and for difficult extrusion dies. Anviloy 1150 is a material with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, good thermal conductivity, and good material properties at elevated temperatures that combine for superior performance in a variety of applications. This unusual combination of properties results in a material with less thermal fatigue in the casting die or extrusion die.

The bars and inserts listed below are made in the following RWMA group B alloys: Class 10, Class 11, and Class 12. Bars and inserts of Class 13 and Class 14, as well as special sizes and shapes, are priced on request.

GROUP B REFRACTORY METAL COMPOSITIONS

RWMA CLASS 10

Tungsten 55% – Copper 45%, suited for facings and inserts for projection welding electrodes and flash and butt welding electrodes. It is recommended where (relatively) high electrical conductivity and some degree of malleability is desired.

RWMA CLASS 11

Tungsten 75% – Copper 25%, suited to similar applications as Class 10, and for facing on electrode forming electrodes. It is harder than Class 10, and is for general use in projection welding electrodes.

RWMA CLASS 12

Tungsten 80% – Copper 20%, suited for electro-forming and electro-forging facings, and for electrode facings used to upset studs and rivets. A material for heavy-duty projection welding electrodes.

RWMA CLASS 13 (PURE TUNGSTEN)

RWMA CLASS 14 (PURE MOLYBDENUM)

Class 13 and 14 materials are used primarily for welding or electro-brazing non-ferrous metals having relatively high electrical conductivity. They are suited to cross-wire welding of copper and brass, and for welding copper wire braid to brass or bronze terminals. Special set-ups and procedures are required.
